The Boston Cycling Community

I don't consider myself an expert cyclist. According to Bikey Face, a Boston-lady-biker blog, I'm making my way out of the Beginner Biker Scale.

Luckily for me, Boston has a thriving cycling community and a wealth of bike shops. I've found that bikers in Boston are enormously helpful in explaining brands, types, and their personal favorites in gear and bike accessories. I really could not have adequately prepared for Bike & Build if it wasn't for a few local gems and honorable mentions:

Of the many bike shops in Boston, Ferris Wheels was my local go-to about everything - saddle, pedals, shoes, rain jacket... name a part and I probably got it at Ferris Wheels. The sales folks, particularly Kate and Dustin, took time to walk me through all my options for products they carry. No one there is a bike snob, and they won't try to rip you off.

Giant sponsors the bikes for B&B riders (more on the Avail in another post). I also went to Giant for my fitting. Seth, the fitting guy, took really exact measurements and adjusted my bike by millimeters. Not everyone needs a fitting to enjoy a bike ride, but these small adjustments will save a lot of pain over a 4,000 mile trip. Seth told me a story about when he learned to use clipless pedals while mountain biking and a man foraging wild mushrooms had to rescue him.

These two cyclists gave me great tips and on where to train in the Boston area, both recommending Trapelo Road and doing hill repeats on the Blue Hills.

Dora handmade my lovely polka dotted cycling cap that I'm proudly wearing cross-country, and she is fantastic with female touring advice.
