An Average Day on Bike & Build

This was day 10 of our trip, and I’ve been trying to find an average day to summarize the Bike & Build experience. But I realized today that with every day riding down new roads, every night sleeping in a different church, every 3 days doing laundry, and every 7 days rotating chore responsibilities, each day is unlike the other.

So, here was today’s schedule:

5:30 am – wake up, get dressed, pack bin, pack Camelbak, clean up the host site, fill Gatorade bottles, fill hydration bladder
6:30 am – route meeting, affordable housing presentation, town presentation, ABC bike check
7 am – breakfast, stretch, apply sunblock, grab some chalk and snacks to go
7:30 am – hit the road! I was one of the first riders to leave the host site, so JD and I were initially the choppers. We stopped at every turn and drew directional arrows on the pavement, according to the cue sheet.
10:30 am – lunch at the halfway point, reapply sunblock
11:30 am – second half of the day
4 pm – deadline to arrive at the host site. Arriving early means down time, being the first to shower, or exploring the town we’re staying in.
6:30 pm – dinner
11pm – lights out

And here’s what we ate today:

Breakfast: cereal. This morning we didn’t have milk, so we improvised and poured melting ice cream into our cereal. Some others, like myself, preferred to improvise with hot cocoa. We had no spoons, so we consumed our cereal and ice cream/hot cocoa with forks.
Morning snack: apple
Lunch: PBJ, banana, brownie, cookie
Afternoon snack: Clif bar, thanks to my mom’s care package!
Late afternoon snack: nature valley granola bar, apple
Dinner: two sandwiches, fruit cup, coleslaw, three chocolate chip cookies (provided by the host church)
Hydration: about 150 ounces while on the road - 100 oz. water in hydration bladder, 50 oz. of Gatorade
