Build Day #2: Sumter, SC

South Carolina is the state where we have the most build days out of any other state. I worked on sanding down doors, screwing in hinges, and helping to prime and paint  a top coat to more doors. The weather the past two days, according to the South Carolinians, has been more mild than in years past. The temperature’s in the 80s by midday, and real nice in the evenings.

I heard one South Carolinian call a North Carolinian a Yankee, I asked her, “What does that make me?!” and she quickly clarified, “Well, you’re nice, so you’re alright.” People seem disappointed by my lack of a Boston accent. However, I am getting away with dropping words like folks and y’all already. In New England I’m called out every time I say folks.

After today’s build day I took a splendid nap, while others began to paint the van. I’m not feeling sore after yesterday’s ride, which was personally my farthest. In the evening one of the trip leaders, Cassie, gave the team a presentation about what affordable housing is all about in the United States.
