Second day on the road. Today was an 80 mile ride. Well it
was supposed to be 70 miles, but a few of us took a wrong turn just 15 miles
into our ride, and we had to backtrack. But we stopped at stretched after our
15 mile warm up! Getting lost is bound to happen - good thing we like riding
bikes.
Lunch time was fun and we had a dance party. I didn’t stay
long because we had one of our longer rides and we are supposed to arrive at
our host sites by 4pm. After lunch I got a major rush of energy, and sped off
from my group at 22mph. Then 15 miles later I “bonked” – which is when you feel fatigued in an endurance sport – and stopped to eat a snack in the shade of an abandoned carwash. The lady at the gas station, as lots of folks in South
Carolina have, asked me where I was going. I get a kick out of grinning and
replying, “California,” and watching their shocked faces.

The roads are lined with young fields of corn and wheat. I
can’t wait to finally get to eat corn off the stalk.

Everyone found today’s 80 mile ride to be a challenge. I’ll
sleep well on the church floor tonight! The church in Sumter has finished
cooking dinner for us. This place has an air hockey table, a pool table, and a
playground.
