Cassis vs. Cascades

Alturas, CA to Cassel, CA

This was a longer day of 87 miles. There were three separate mountain passes. The team agrees that a climb had a rewarding descent, which is better than a headwind on a straight flat road. After the desert, I am happy to be in the forest surrounded by trees. I've been asking lately, "Where are all my forest friends? Squirrel? Rabbit?" I did see a quail family cross the road, and a cow hanging out in the shoulder for no reason.

We're not is sunny California. Northern California is pretty cold in the mornings, like 40 degrees, and there's lots of trees and mountains and towns with populations under 1,000 people. That was Cassel. Staying at the volunteer fire department, the community members were so excited to have us. They said they waited all year for the Bike & Builders, and pointed out that we were on the front page of their latest newspaper. We played Uno, and one lady drove Kendra and I to her home to shower.

With less than ten days left, the whole team seems to be very nice and sentimental to one another.
